Recycling and reuse of UHMWPE sheets
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is widely used in industry, transportation, medical treatment, food processing and other fields due to its high wear resistance, impact resistance, chemical corrosion resistance and other characteristics. However, due to its ultra-long molecular chain, UHMWPE faces certain challenges in recycling. Nevertheless, with the advancement of recycling technology, UHMWPE can still be effectively recycled and reused.
1. Challenges of UHMWPE sheet recycling
High molecular weight is difficult to melt process: UHMWPE has a molecular weight of usually more than 3 million, a high melting point and extremely poor melt fluidity, and traditional plastic recycling methods (such as melt regranulation) are difficult to apply directly.
Strong chemical resistance and difficult to degrade: UHMWPE is not easily decomposed by chemical solvents or microorganisms, resulting in a long natural degradation time.
Difficult mechanical crushing: Due to its high toughness and impact resistance, ordinary crushing equipment is difficult to efficiently process waste UHMWPE.
2. Recycling direction of UHMWPE sheets
Recycling method | Recycling products | Applicable fields |
Crushing & hot pressing | Recycled UHMWPE sheets | Floor mats, fenders, sliding pads |
Crushing & extrusion | Filled modified PE | Crash barriers, mixed plastic products |
Mechanical crushing | Granular filling materials | Composite plastics, road construction materials |
Pyrolysis recycling | Fuel oil, synthetic gas | Energy recycling |
Low-temperature crushing | High-strength plastic mixture | Industrial equipment wear-resistant parts |
3. How to choose the right UHMWPE recycling method?
If the sheet is thick and intact, it is recommended to use hot pressing or mechanical recycling to re-manufacture plastic sheets or floor mats.
If the material is severely damaged or contaminated, it is recommended to use pyrolysis to convert it into fuel oil or chemical raw materials.
For UHMWPE waste produced by large enterprises, low-temperature crushing + granulation can be selected for low-end plastic product manufacturing, such as filling materials, mixed plastic products, etc.
