Although ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has excellent wear resistance, impact resistance and chemical stability, its UV resistance is weak. Long-term exposure to sunlight may cause aging, discoloration, and brittleness of the material, and affect its service life. Therefore, UHMWPE sheets for outdoor applications usually need to be UV-treated to enhance their weather resistance and durability.
1. UV treatment method
1.1 Adding UV stabilizers
During the production process of UHMWPE sheets, UV stabilizers can be added to improve their UV resistance. Common UV stabilizers include:
Carbon Black: The most effective UV absorber, usually adding 2%~5% can significantly improve UV tolerance, while also enhancing antistatic properties.
UV absorbers: such as benzophenones, triazines, and benzotriazoles, can absorb UV rays and reduce photooxidation.
Light stabilizer (HALS, advanced hindered amine light stabilizer): can delay the degradation process of UHMWPE under ultraviolet radiation and extend the service life.
Advantages: Low cost, suitable for large-scale production
Less impact on the mechanical properties of the material
Long-term UV resistance usually can extend the outdoor service life by 5-10 years
1.2 Surface coating treatment
Coat the surface of the UHMWPE sheet with an anti-UV protective layer, such as:
UV reflective coating: such as ceramic coating, and metal oxide coating, can reflect part of the ultraviolet rays.
Anti-oxidation coating: such as weather-resistant polyurethane coating, can reduce UV erosion and improve durability.
Advantages: Improves UV resistance and scratch resistance
Suitable for high-end applications such as outdoor skating rinks, bulletproof panels, etc.
Disadvantages: High cost, may increase production costs by 10%-30%
The coating may wear over time and requires regular maintenance
1.3 Co-extrusion process (Co-Extrusion)
Using a double-layer or multi-layer co-extrusion process, the surface layer uses UHMWPE with UV stabilizer, and the interior still maintains the original UHMWPE structure. This method can take into account both UV resistance and the mechanical properties of UHMWPE.
Advantages: Stronger UV resistance, can be used for long-term outdoor use
Will not affect the wear resistance and low friction properties of UHMWPE
Disadvantages: Complex production process, high cost
Fewer color options (usually black or dark)
2. Application areas of UV-treated UHMWPE sheets
UV-treated UHMWPE sheets are suitable for the following scenarios:
Synthetic Ice Rink
Marine Dock Fender
Crane Outrigger Pads
Mining Liners
Agricultural Equipment
3. How to choose UV-treated UHMWPE sheets
Long-term outdoor use (>5 years): UHMWPE with carbon black + UV absorber + light stabilizer is recommended
Short-term or medium-term use (1-3 years): Surface UV coating can be selected
High-end applications (bulletproof, protection): Co-extrusion process UHMWPE is recommended
Through reasonable UV treatment, UHMWPE sheets can be used for a longer time in outdoor environments, improving economy and durability!
