How to bend HDPE sheets?

Bending HDPE (high-density polyethylene) sheets is a common thermoforming method, suitable for manufacturing curved structures, baffles, box corners and other products. Because HDPE material has good flexibility and thermoplasticity, it can be bent by controlled heating. The following are detailed methods and precautions:

  1. Methods for bending HDPE sheets
    Method 1: Hot bending (local heating)
    Suitable for 90° bending, U-shaped, L-shaped and other fixed-point bending.
    Tool materials:
    Hot air gun (adjustable temperature)
    Heating rod/hot wire bending machine (recommended for precise bending)
    Support mold or press plate
    Clamp
    Infrared thermometer (recommended)
    Operation steps:
    Mark the bending line: mark the bending position on the HDPE sheet.
    Heating the bending area:
    Use a hot air gun or heating rod to heat evenly along the bending line;
    The heating temperature is controlled at 130℃~150℃;
    The time is controlled at 1~3 minutes, adjusted according to the thickness;
    Thick plates need to be heated on both sides at the same time;
    Bending operation:
    When heated to softness, put it into the mold or press it by hand to the required angle;
    Keep the bending state until it cools and sets (can be cooled with cold water or natural air);
    Setting: Release after complete cooling and keep it as it is.
    Applicable thickness:
    1–10mm: ordinary hot air gun is enough;
    10mm: It is recommended to use a professional hot bending machine, or extend the heating time.
    Method 2: Overall thermoforming (oven heating)
    Applicable to bending large-area plates (such as grooves and corrugated plates).
    Operation steps:
    Put the HDPE sheet into the heating oven and set the temperature to 130°C~160°C;
    Heat evenly until the whole sheet becomes soft (usually takes 5-15 minutes);
    Put it in the mold after taking it out, or bend it into the desired shape manually;
    Fix it and cool it to shape.
    Precautions:
    The temperature control must be accurate. If it exceeds 160°C, it is easy to decompose and discolor;
    Do not grill it directly with open flames, as it is easy to melt or bubble locally;
    Do not let the sheet warp or hang in the air during heating, otherwise it will easily deform after cooling;
    After bending, you can use a cooling fixture to assist in shaping and improve the angle accuracy;
    Be careful to prevent scalding during operation and wear high temperature resistant gloves.
