There are many ways to cut HDPE (high-density polyethylene) sheets, depending on the sheet thickness, cutting accuracy requirements and equipment conditions. The following are practical HDPE sheet cutting methods and precautions:
I. Common cutting tools and methods

- Circular saw (table saw/handheld circular saw)
Applicable thickness: 2–50 mm
Saw blade selection: woodworking saw blade with carbide teeth (such as tungsten carbide teeth)
Advantages: fast straight line cutting and high efficiency
Precautions:
Control the feed speed to avoid plastic melting or sticking to the saw blade due to excessive heat
Use a clamp to fix the sheet to avoid vibration or movement - Band saw machine
Applicable thickness: 5–100 mm or even thicker
Advantages: suitable for cutting curves, special shapes, and thick plates
Precautions:
The saw blade should be sharp and have a suitable tooth pitch (usually coarse teeth)
Cooling fans or intermittent cutting can be used to reduce the temperature - CNC machining center/engraving machine
Applicable: precise size, special shape cutting, mass production
Tool recommendation: single-edge spiral milling cutter (HDPE-specific or plastic-specific tool)
Spindle speed: 18000–24000 rpm (depending on tool diameter)
Feed speed: 800–3000 mm/min (adjustable)
Advantages: high precision, high batch efficiency
Cooling recommendations: dry cutting or use compressed air cooling to avoid moisture absorption and deformation caused by water cooling - Jigsaw / Handheld Saw (Jigsaw)
Applicable: small and light work
Saw blade: choose a special saw blade for plastic/soft materials
Precautions:
Operate slowly to avoid edge burning
Pay attention to support and smooth advancement - Laser cutting / hot cutting
Not recommended: HDPE has a low melting point, and lasers can easily cause edge melting, blackening and toxic gases
It is recommended to avoid using it for thick plates or occasions with high precision requirements
II. Cutting precautions
Avoid hot melting and edge burning: cutting too slowly or saw blades/knives are not sharp, which will generate high temperatures and cause plastic melting and adhesion.
Fixed plates: Thick plates or large-sized plates must be firmly clamped to ensure cutting straightness and flatness.
Grinding edges: After cutting, the edges can be lightly processed with a file, sandpaper or deburrer to make them smoother.
Safety protection: Wear protective glasses and masks to avoid inhaling dust or plastic fumes.
