Making feed boxes by processing HDPE (high-density polyethylene) plastic sheets is a very practical and durable solution in agriculture and animal husbandry. HDPE sheets have good corrosion resistance, weather resistance, non-toxicity, and easy cleaning characteristics. They are suitable for making feed boxes or feeding troughs for cattle, sheep, pigs, horses and other animals.

- Advantages of HDPE feed boxes
Food-grade materials: safe and non-toxic, can directly contact feed
Chemical corrosion resistance: suitable for adding minerals and pharmaceutical feed
UV resistance: suitable for outdoor use, not easy to age
Lightweight and high-strength: easy to carry and strong impact resistance
Easy to clean: smooth surface and non-absorbent, reducing bacterial growth - Processing flow of HDPE feed boxes
- Material preparation
Select 8-15 mm thick HDPE sheets (depending on the size and load of the box)
Food-grade HDPE sheets (such as white and green) are optional
Standard sizes for sheets: 4’×8′ (1220×2440mm) - Cutting
Use a CNC cutting machine or table saw/curve saw to cut out each panel (bottom panel, side panel, back panel, etc.) according to the design
All edges are polished and chamfered to avoid animal injuries - Bending (optional)
If you want to reduce the number of splicing lines, you can use a hot air gun or heating plate to bend the sheet to make a U-shaped or L-shaped box shape
The heating temperature is recommended to be 130–150°C, bend slowly, cool and fix - Splice and assemble
Use stainless steel bolts/rivets/plastic welding for splicing
Hot air welding or extrusion welding is recommended for plastic welding
HDPE welding rods can be used to seal key joints to ensure leakproof and corrosion-resistant - Add structural parts
Structures such as support feet, fixing holes, hook slots, and covers can be added
Drainage ports can be left at the bottom or cleaning ports can be installed
III. Schematic diagram of common feed box designs (examples):
Type Size example (mm) Features
Ground feed trough 1000×400×200 Simple and durable, suitable for sheep and pigs
Wall-mounted feed box 600×300×250 Can be fixed on railings or fences
Large feed box for cattle 2000×500×500 Large capacity, with drainage design
Precautions:
HDPE board has a large thermal expansion and contraction rate, so pay attention to leaving gaps or reinforcement when designing
The joints of the boards should be fully sealed to prevent dirt and grime
Different colors and logos can be selected according to the type of breeding
