It is relatively difficult to bond HDPE (high-density polyethylene) sheets together because it has low surface energy, chemical inertness, and is not easy to bond with most adhesives. However, there are still several effective methods to achieve a strong connection between HDPE sheets.

- Preferred method: thermal welding (plastic welding)
This is the most reliable connection method at the industrial level.
Method type:
Hot air welding (using plastic hot air gun + HDPE welding rod)
Extrusion welding (for thick plates, structural parts)
Butt fusion welding / hot plate welding (flat welding)
Features:
High connection strength, almost the same as the parent material;
Applicable to HDPE sheet thickness from 3mm to more than 50mm;
Commonly used in water tanks, guard plates, breeding equipment, outdoor structures, etc. - Secondary method: surface treatment + special glue bonding
HDPE itself is difficult to bond with traditional adhesives, but after surface treatment, special adhesives can be used.
The steps are as follows:
① Surface treatment:
Flame treatment: Use a butane or propane spray gun to quickly sweep the bonding area to modify the surface;
Rough grinding: Use sandpaper to roughen the surface (80-120 mesh is recommended);
Optional: Use isopropyl alcohol to clean and degrease the surface.
② Choose the right glue:
Loctite 3030 (industrial grade special glue, special for PE/PP)
3M Scotch-Weld DP8005/DP8010 (two-component structural glue)
Permabond Polyolefin Primer + Cyanoacrylate (502) combination
③ Bonding & curing:
Clamp for 10-30 minutes after applying the glue;
Curing time varies from 1 hour to 24 hours depending on the type of glue.
Advantages and disadvantages:
Advantages Disadvantages
Easy to construct Not as strong as welding
Can be used for thin plates and small parts High cost, some require primer
Not suitable for large area or load-bearing connection - Mechanical connection (auxiliary means)
Bolt + gasket fixation;
Slot connection;
Can be used in combination with glue or welding to enhance structural stability.
