How to maintain plastic cutting boards to prevent microplastics?

To reduce the generation of microplastics from plastic cutting boards (especially small particles released during cutting), daily maintenance and usage are critical. Here are some practical suggestions to help extend the life of plastic cutting boards and minimize the risk of residual microplastics:

  1. Choose cutting boards made of suitable materials
    Preferably use food-grade HDPE or UHMWPE materials: these materials have good cutting resistance, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and are not prone to debris.
    Avoid using inferior or recycled plastic cutting boards: these materials have a loose structure and are more likely to peel off microparticles during cutting.
  2. Correct use and cleaning methods
    Wash regularly with warm water + neutral detergent, and use a soft brush to clean residues in grooves or scratches.
    Avoid using hard cleaning tools such as steel wool to prevent scratches on the surface and the generation of particles.
    Avoid using strong acid/alkaline cleaning fluids, which can easily damage the surface structure.
    Avoid exposing the cutting board to the sun or putting it in the dishwasher for high-temperature cleaning. High temperatures can easily cause the board to age and deform, and release microplastics.
  3. Pay attention to the usage
    Do not cut frequently in the same area, which is easy to form deep marks and produce plastic chips;
    Try to use sharper knives. Blunt knives are more likely to leave scratches and chips on the cutting board than sharp knives;
    Use cutting boards in categories: such as raw meat, raw fish, vegetables, and cooked food separately to avoid cross contamination and extend life.
  4. Replace regularly
    Once the surface of the cutting board has too many scratches, discoloration, and fluff, it means that the surface structure begins to loosen and should be replaced in time;
    It is generally recommended that home users check the status of the cutting board every 6-12 months.
  5. Recommended regular disinfection methods (without damaging the material)
    Spray with white vinegar + water or hydrogen peroxide (3%), let it stand for 5 minutes and then wash;
    Wipe with more than 70% alcohol;
    Scrub with lemon slices + coarse salt, which is effective in removing odors and dirt.
