Working principle of polyethylene ground protection mats

Polyethylene ground protection mats (Ground Protection Mats) are an engineering plastic sheet designed for temporary roads, heavy equipment passage and ground protection. Common materials are HDPE or UHMWPE. Its working principle is mainly to disperse pressure, improve traction, and isolate the ground from contact with equipment, thereby protecting the ground from damage, while improving construction safety and efficiency.
Working principle details:

ground protection mat
  1. Pressure dispersion
When heavy equipment (such as cranes, mixer trucks) travel on mud, lawns or soft ground, their tires or legs will generate a lot of pressure, which can easily cause:
    Ground subsidence
    Soil compaction damage
    Terrain deformation
Polyethylene mats evenly distribute the weight of the equipment over a larger area, greatly reducing the force per unit area, and play the role of “widening the ground support base”.
  2. Increase friction and traction
The surface of the mat is usually designed with double-sided patterns (such as diamond patterns and tooth patterns), which have good:
    Anti-slip performance
    Improved traction
Prevent vehicles from slipping or idling in place
This is particularly important for mud, slopes, and grasslands, and effectively ensures the safety of equipment operation.
  3. Isolation and protection
The ground protection mat forms an insulating buffer layer between the equipment and the ground, which can:
Prevent the equipment from directly rolling over the ground
Prevent chemical liquid leakage from contaminating the soil (some gaskets prevent chemical corrosion)
Isolate moisture and extend the life of the bottom of the equipment
  4. Thermal expansion and contraction absorption capacity
Polyethylene material has good elasticity and toughness. When it expands and contracts or the terrain is slightly undulating, the ground mat itself can adapt to a certain deformation without cracking or breaking.
  5. Modular assembly structure
Polyethylene ground mats are usually equipped with connecting buckles or splicing holes, which can be quickly assembled like “ground blocks” to form continuous channels or large-area platforms to meet the needs of complex construction sites.
